Two new police districts proposed to increase policing efficiency

After the Delhi Government’s decision to decentralise the public administrative districts in order to strengthen local governance, Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma has proposed two new police disctricts in the city to effectively carry out policing work.

As per the proposal sent o lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung for his final approval, Delhi will have two new police districts — Rohini and Shahdara. The proposal was made witnessing the increase in urban population and influx of migrants in the city. In the last one decade, the city expanded in these two bordering areas.

As per the proposal, Rohini will have three sub-divisions —Rohini, Sultanpuri and Punjabi Bagh. The district will comprise of nine existing police stations and eventually new police stations will be constructed. Rohini district will carve its jurisdiction out of Outer and West police districts. Similarly, Shahdara district to be carved out from East and North East police districts will have three sub-divisions: Shahdara, Preet Vihar and Seemapuri.

Apart from existing police stations, the new districts will be allotted 150 policemen each. One post of Deputy Commissioner of Police and one of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for each new district have been proposed.

Sources said the two new proposed districts will be notified by next month.

The Commissioner had also planned to make one more new district Dwarka but the proposal was dropped at the last moment. In Dwarka district, 10 police stations —Dwarka North, Dwarka South Dwarka Sector 23, Palam Village, Dabri, Sagar Pur, Delhi Cant, Naraina, Inderpuri and Bindapur —  were planned to incorporate but due to lack of manpower the proposal was not sent to the l-G.

In the meantime, the AAP Government is looking at decentralising the public administrative districts in order to strengthen the local governance. In a related development, the Delhi Government's Revenue Department has set up a four-member committee headed by South District Deputy Commissioner (revenue) Niharika Rai to finalise Delhi District Administrative Bill 2010 lying unattended from last six years.

"The purpose of the Bill is for strengthening and promote  the local Government system to decentralise the public administration, to provide uniform local administrative units and to secure effective and effective and lawful execution of Acts and rules," said a committee member on the condition of anonymity.

The committee is to hold meetings and discussions over the boundaries of the revenue districts and come up with final Bill soon."In Delhi, police and revenue districts are different and there is lot on confusion over it. The idea is to end confusion for the common people as well as equally sharing works in each districts," said the officer, adding that the main motive is for smooth functioning of the Government.

Currently , there are 11 revenue districts — Central, East, New Delhi, North East, North West, North, South East, South West, South, West and Shahdara — and plans are to restructure and not to increase it as planned by the Delhi Police, said sources.
