Saturday, 16 September 2017 | Omer Farooq | Hyderabad

Hyderabad police constable Syed Abdul Qadeer who spent more than 25 years in prison for killing his superior officer on duty, died on Friday at his home. Abdul Qadeer had created a sensation when he shot dead Assistant Commissioner of police N Sattaiah at Chhatrinaka Police station in old city of Hyderabad on December 8, 1990. The incident had occurred during the horrendous and the worst ever communal riots in Hyderabad in which more than two hundred people died.  Abdul Qadeer, who had surrendered after shooting the ACP alleged that his superior was selectively targeting a particular community in dealing with the violence.

Qadeer was unwell for the last few weeks and died in the morning.

"I could not bear this and shot him", he told the investigators.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment and even after spending 14 years in jail the successive governments refused to commute his sentence and release him. Whenever his petition for release came up Sattaiah's family as well as police officials opposed it. However he was released on parole several times on the representation of Majlis-e_Ittehadul Muslimeen legislators as he was suffering from many ailments.

His leg was also amputed due to diabetes.

Finally in March 2016 the TRS government released him from jail after he had completed 25 years and three months in jail.

He was unwell for the last few weeks and died this morning. Abdul Qadeer survived by wife and three children. His Namaz e Janaza was performed in Mecca Masjid and buried in an old city Kabristan.
