Bhagabati Panigrahi birth anniv held

Friday, 03 February 2017 | PNS | Bhubaneswar

The 109th birth anniversary of legendary Communist leader Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi was observed at the Smt Nandini Satpathy Memorial Trust (SNSMT) headquarters here on Thursday.

The meeting was addressed by SNSMT chairman Suparno Satpathy, who spoke about the sacrifices of Panigrahi and his contemporary Indian freedom struggle heroes such as Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh.

Panigrahi was the founder of Communist movement in Odisha. On October 23, 1943, he was found dead under mysterious circumstances. When he died, he was under detention by the British. It is said that he was tortured and killed, but what was put on records to save the British was that he died because of an unknown illness.

The meeting resolved that history needs to be rewritten with true facts from those testing years of the Indian freedom struggle. It was also resolved that a think tank be constituted to drive research work.

CPI(M) secretary general Sitaram Yachuri tweeted a tweet of Suparno Satpathy which he had put out on the occasion, with a lal Salaam for Panigrahi.
