One-way traffic system put in place in Nainital during tourist season

Monday, 01 May 2017 | PNS | Nainital

A one-way traffic system has been put in place in the lake city Nainital in order to regulate vehicular traffic in the town during the tourist season. The one-way traffic system which was imposed from Sunday will be in force till July 15, informed the officials here.

The Nainital police circle officer Vijay Thapa informed that till July 15, the traffic will be allowed one- way from the Masjid intersection to Raj Bhawan intersection and onwards from the Colletorate intersection to Fansi Gadera. He further said that during this time period no vehicle will be allowed to ply from the Fansi Gadera towards the Raj Bhawan.

Taking cognisance of the importance of security related tasks, the heavy vehicles of the army and the police will be exempt from the one-way system from the Fansi Gadera towards the army camp and police line. The police circle officer further informed that a one-way system of traffic will also be in place during the aforementioned period from the Ghoda Stand to the Nainital Club intersection. He said that in case of excessive vehicular pressure and congestion in the lake city, the flow of traffic will be diverted and regulated through alternate routes including stretches from Barapatthar to Sherwood, to Fansi Gadera via Raj Bhawan intersection, from Barapatthar via Birla temple, India Hotel intersection Tallital Danth and from Masjid intersection via Raj Bhawan, Fansi Gadera.

The vehicles being driven towards the High Court of Uttarakhand in Nainital will be plied via the Masjid intersection. Those who do not follow the traffic system put in place will be dealt with stringently and penalised under the Uttarakhand Police Act section 53 and the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, added the police circle officer.

It is pertinent to mention here that like various other towns popular with tourists especially during the summer season, Nainital too suffers from traffic congestion especially on days that see a rise in tourist foot falls. It remains to be seen whether the one-way traffic system implemented by the authorities is able to resolve the traffic problem in the lake city.
