Did one know which park supplied roses for country’s first Prime Minister Nehru’s jacket? Or which park was modelled after Brindavan Gardens in Mysore? The answer is Jubilee Park in Jamshedpur.

A gift to the citizens of by Tata Steel on the occasion of its golden jubilee in 1958,

The 237.75- acre jubilee perk, modelled after Brindavan Gardens in Mysore, is considered the green heart of the city.

The park is celebrating its diamond jubilee this year.

A memorable day in the life of Tata Steel was the Golden Jubilee when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru came to open the public gardens bequeathed to the city by the steel company. Jubilee Park was set up in the heart of the city in 1958.

The park’s Moghul Garden is fashioned on the lines of famous Brindavan Gardens of Mysore and designed by architect B. S Nirody and G. H Krumbiegel.

Its Rose Garden has over 1000 varieties of multicolored roses spreading their fragrance.

The roses from the garden used to be sent to country’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

“I still vividly remember the day was March 1, 1958.  Our Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had come to Jamshedpur, at the invitation of his old friend J RD Tata, to participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Indian steel industry.

The Prime Minster was received at the airport by Dr Zakir Hussain, Governor of Bihar, Dr Sri Krishna Sinha, Chief Minister and other members of the Bihar Cabinet, Sardar Baldeo Singh, Mr and Mrs JRD Tata, Sir Jehangir and Lady Ghandy, and a large number of officials and citizens,” recollected octogenarian Rameshwar Prasad.

About Jubilee Park, JRD Tata had said: ‘As the first fifty years of the Steel Works and the town of Jamshedpur drew to a close, we thought it appropriate to create a permanent memorial of the occasion which would be of some value to those who worked and spent their lives here.  We decided upon a park.”

The park’s horticultural garden is renowned for the rose hybrids it has developed and christened with intriguing names like ‘Taxi’ and ‘Pioneering Pilot’.

Altogether over 1000 varieties of Indian roses greet the visitor in the Jubilee Park.

The lovely lake in the Jubilee Park is one of the main attractions as one gets to see various rare migratory birds.

There is a ‘Smriti Udyan’ where one can plant saplings in the memory of a special occasion or a loved one.

The other crowd pulling areas in the park include Jayanti Sarovar, Smriti Udyan, Nicco Amusement Park,

Laser Show and Musical Fountain, Tata Steel Zoological Park, Children’s Corner which is dotted with swings, see-saws, Upvan, Jubilee Nehru tree corner and Shatabdi Udyan (developed by Tata steel to mark its centenary year) and Upvan (commonly known as picnic spot).
