Dr Ashutosh Sayana would be the new principal of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Dehradun. He was at present holding the charge of director, medical education. On Friday, the State Government has appointed him the principal GDMC, a post which had been lying vacant for some time. The charge of the director, medical education would now be assumed by mission director, National Health Mission (NHM). Dr Sayana assumed his new onus on Friday as he took over the charge of the principal from the officiating principal Dr Navin Thapliyal.
Talking to The Pioneer after taking charge, he said that his first priority would be to make required preparations for the upcoming visit of Medical Council of India (MCI). The new principal added that the recruitment for the vacant posts of the doctors and the nursing staff in the hospital would be made soon and the facilities for the patients at the GDMC Hospital would be increased.
“The new OPD building is almost ready and it would soon be made operational. I would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the medical college evolves into a tertiary care centre with superspecialty facilities,’’ he said.
The post of principal GDMC remained vacant from November last when the 3-year deputation of the principal Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta ended.
Dr Gupta had applied for extension of his deputation but it had been not accepted by the Government. The works of the principal had been discharged by Prof Navin Thapliyal in the interim.
Observers said that the upcoming visit of MCI to the college aside from the multiple problems the college has been facing has warranted the appointment of the principal.
