Jail authorities in Uttar Pradesh have undergone Covid 19 tests in prisons and till now over 70,000 tests were done in which 1,690 inmates and 59 jail employees were found positive.
This was stated by additional chief secretary, home, Awanish Awasthi, here on Tuesday. The state has already set up 83 temporary jails in 64 districts where the new prisoners are kept for 14 days in view of the Covid pandemic and later shifted to main jails. All the inmates in the temporary jails are tested for Covid.
Meanwhile, DG jail Anand Kumar said due to pandemic, no visitors are allowed inside the jail nor the inmates are being brought out from the jail to produce them in courts.
Kumar said during the coronavirus pandemic, the prisoners too have contributed in making face masks and PPE kits. “We have set up a sewing unit in the jails where till date over 30 lakh face masks and 2400 PPE kits were made,” he said, adding that 14.5 lakh masks and 250 PPE kits were provided to the government agencies. Besides, he said, the jails also produced sanitisers.
Kumar said jail officials are concerned about the health of prisoners and, hence, immunity boosting food was given to them while daily yoga sessions are also being conducted.
