Taking a step further to bring girls in Sainik Schools, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) allowed some Sainik Schools including Sainik School Tilaiya to admit girls from the next batch. This step comes after a pilot project of the Defence Ministry in Sainik School Chhingchhip, Mizoram succeeded when six girl cadets were admitted in class 6th in June 2018 in a move towards gender equality.

The enrollment process for girl students in class VI has started. The school's Principal Group Captain Rahul Saklani on Tuesday met Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The Principal informed the Chief Minister about commencement of girls’ education from the new academic session. The principal also urged the Chief Minister that the state government should come forward in developing infrastructure for the new system (girls’ education) to be started for the daughters in the school.

The school principal urged the Jharkhand government to bear scholarship meant for students studying at Sainik School, Tilaiya and pension to the employees. The school's administrative officer, Lieutenant Commander Kumar Himanshu Shekhar and other military officers were present on the occasion.

Sainik School, Tilaiya, Office Superintendent, AK Trivedi said, “From next academic session the school will start admission for girl students. The admission process has started. The last date for submitting application forms is December 3.” “The admission will be done in class   VI and the school has reserved ten per cent seats for girl students,” added Trivedi.  The age limit for admission of students is 10-12 years.

It was on 16 Sept of 1963, that the foundation stone of the 12 Sainik Schools in the chain of 33 Sainik Schools sprawling across the length and breadth of the country was laid down. This fledgling nascent school was a sequel to the concerted endeavour of the legendary cultural ambassador and the then Union Defence Minister, Late V K Krishna Menon and the visionary Chief Minister from Bihar Late K B Sahay.

In November last year,  Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved five Sainik Schools for admission of girls. Sainik Schools Bijapur, Chandrapur, Ghorakhal, Kalikiri and Kodagu were included in the list, later many more Sainik Schools were covered under the ambit.

Students of Sainik Schools are called cadets like the trainees of the pre-commission military academies.
