Rebuild Trust: ECI faces credibility Test

Rahul Gandhi’s serious allegations on voter list discrepancies spark credibility test for Election Commission amid Bihar roll controversy

Election Commission of India (ECI) has been facing ire of the Opposition for quite sometime now over the revision of electoral rolls ahead of Bihar elections. The matter is sub judice and ECI has a lot to explain over its decision to remove the name of 6.5 million voters for not showing their papers. In yet another blow to its credibility Rahul Gandhi has raised serious questions over the faulty voter lists and anomalies in electoral rolls in Karnataka. The allegations have intensified demands for transparency, impartiality and electoral reforms to safeguard voters’ rights in the world’s largest democracy.  Citing official records, Rahul Gandhi gave specific examples; he claimed that one voter was listed in multiple constituencies and that 80 voters were registered at the same address — a single-room house in the Mahadevapura Assembly  in Karnataka. Gandhi demanded that the EC release digital voter lists and CCTV footage from polling stations spanning the last decade.

The Election Commission responded with an unusually sharp counterattack. Notices were issued to Gandhi through the Chief Electoral Officers of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Haryana, demanding that he provide evidence under oath or face legal action for misleading the public. Karnataka’s CEO went further, disputing Gandhi’s assertion that a voter had cast two ballots, stating that the document he presented was not an official record. This political storm coincides with a separate controversy over the Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The SIR process, intended to clean up and update electoral records, has come under intense criticism after reports that 6.5 million names were deleted from draft rolls because the Election Commission did not accept Aadhaar cards or even Voter ID cards issued by its own office as valid proof of residence. These incidents raise serious doubts about the Election Commission’s credibility and impartiality, and they risk eroding public faith in the democratic process.

If Gandhi’s claims are unfounded, the Commission must demonstrate this convincingly and publicly. That means not just demanding affidavits from him, but also proactively releasing verifiable data — machine-readable voter lists and relevant CCTV records — to clear the air. As of the time of writing, the Commission has neither committed to investigating the cases brought to its attention nor refuted Gandhi’s claims. It is difficult to determine whether the anomalies highlighted are genuine or fabricated, and whether they result from deliberate actions or systemic errors, but they unquestionably require thorough investigation and accountability. It is also important to address the structural changes that have raised doubts about the Commission’s independence. India’s democratic machinery depends on the unshakable trust of its voters. The current moment is not merely about deflecting allegations; it is about reaffirming that every citizen’s vote is secure, every election is fair, and the Election Commission stands above political influence. By choosing openness over opacity, and reform over complacency, the ECI can not only defuse this storm but also strengthen the foundations of the democracy it is supposed to protect.
