A powerful car explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday evening killed at least ten people and injured over 20 others, sending shockwaves through the nation and prompting global condolences.
The blast, which occurred near Gate No 1 of the Red Fort metro station, caused a massive fire that engulfed several vehicles. Investigators have said preliminary evidence suggests a terror attack.
Messages of sympathy and solidarity poured in from across the world as foreign governments, diplomats, and global leaders condemned the attack and expressed support for India.
The United States Embassy in New Delhi said it was “deeply saddened by the terrible explosion in New Delhi,” offering condolences to the victims and their families. The embassy also issued a security alert advising American citizens in India to avoid crowded areas, especially around the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, and to remain alert.
British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron said her thoughts were with those affected by the tragedy and urged UK nationals in India to follow the guidance of local authorities. The British Government also updated its travel advisory for India in light of the incident.
Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, extended condolences on behalf of his government and people, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. French Ambassador Thierry Mathou also expressed grief, saying France stood in solidarity with India during this difficult time.
The Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, conveying condolences to the families of the victims and praying for the recovery of those injured.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India also expressed solidarity and condolences. In a post on X, the envoy said, “I & Bangladesh High Commission colleagues deeply condole death of at least 10 Indians and many injured in this evening’s car blast in Red Fort, Delhi. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those impacted, including their families. Bangladesh stands by India at this distressful hour.” He tagged the Ministry of External Affairs.
Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also reacted to the incident, saying, “Shocked to hear about the terror attack in New Delhi. All should unite to eradicate the scourge of terrorism. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were impacted by this dastardly attack.”
The Embassy of Morocco, the Australian High Commission, and the Iranian Embassy joined other nations in expressing condolences and solidarity with India.
Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the explosion took place inside a Hyundai i20 car parked near a traffic signal close to the Red Fort. He said CCTV footage and forensic evidence are being examined as part of a comprehensive investigation. “We are exploring all angles and will ensure that the findings are made public,” he said.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the blast, and the fire was brought under control after several hours of effort. Images from the scene showed charred vehicles, shattered windows, and thick smoke rising from the area, one of Delhi’s most popular tourist destinations.
Security has been stepped up across the national capital, with additional personnel deployed at metro stations, airports, and key government buildings. Delhi Police and central agencies remain on high alert as investigations continue.
As Delhi mourns the victims of one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, leaders and citizens worldwide continue to express solidarity, emphasizing the need for global unity against terrorism.
