Emergency kits distributed to volunteers

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills in collaboration with the State Disaster Managernent Authority (SDMA), Meghalaya,, successfully organised a programme for the distribution of Emergency Responder Kits (ERK) to trained Aapda Mitra Volunteers under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) on the 4th of November, 2025, at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.

The programme commenced with the arrival and felicitation of the Chief Guest, Lakmen Rymbui, Minister In-charge, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Education, etc., along with other dignitaries. The event began with a welcome address by S Warjri, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO, DDMA, East Khasi Hills, followed by a documentary screening on the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme, highlighting the role and contributions of the volunteers in disaster response and preparedness.

RM Kurbah, IAS, Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson, DDMA, East Khasi Hills, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the importance of community-based disaster preparedness and the active participation of youth volunteers in enhancing resilience at the grassroots level. The programme also featured experience sharing by YAMS volunteer Miss Kerda Khongwir and a speech by Col. Deepak Nambair, Commanding Officer 61 Bn Meghalaya NCC, on partnership perspectives with various stakeholders in disaster preparedness.

M War Nongbri, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, addressed the gathering, lauding the efforts of the volunteers and underlining the value of collaboration among departments, institutions and communities in mitigating disaster risks. A demonstration by the Aapda Mitra Volunteers showcased their skills and preparedness in emergency response scenarios.

In his address, the Chief Guest,  Lakmen Rymbui, appreciated the dedication of the trained volunteers and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness through such capacity-building initiatives. The highlight of the event was the distribution of Emergency Responder Kits to the trained Yuva Aapda Mitra Volunteers, equipping them with essential equipments to effectively respond to emergencies.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Smti. K. Wanniang, District Disaster Management Officer, Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority, The event marked another milestone in building a community-based disaster response mechanism in Meghalaya, empowering the youth to act as first responders during times of need.
