KUNO: First Indian cheetahs Born
Indian-born cheetah Mukhi has given birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, marking a historic milestone for Project Cheetah and conservation in India. Mukhi, the first Indian-born female cheetah since the species’ reintroduction three years ago, is now also the first to reproduce in the country. Officials described the successful birth as a strong indicator of the species’ adaptation, health, and long-term viability in Indian habitats. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav highlighted the development as unprecedented and a sign of optimism for establishing a self-sustaining and genetically diverse cheetah population in India. The cheetah was reintroduced on September 17, 2022, when eight animals-five females and three males-were brought from Namibia, marking India’s first intercontinental translocation of the species. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called the event a significant achievement that reinforces confidence in the nation’s wildlife conservation strategies.
