The Government of India has officially revised the designation of Amarendu Prakash, the head of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), from "Chairman" to "Chairman and Managing Director (CMD)." The decision was communicated by the Ministry of Steel through an immediate directive dated 15 May 2025.
As per the communication issued by Gopalakrishnan Ganesan, Director in the Ministry of Steel, the change in nomenclature has been approved by the Hon'ble Minister of Steel and is to be implemented with immediate effect. The letter has been addressed to the Chairman, SAIL, with instructions to take necessary follow-up action.
This change aligns the designation of SAIL’s top leadership with the common CMD format followed in other major central public sector undertakings. The Ministry has also directed all departments and divisions to update records and official portals accordingly.
Amarendu Prakash, who took over as Chairman of SAIL in May 2023, will now hold the official title of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), SAIL.
