Wednesday, 17 April 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a major breakthrough, the police and paramilitary forces unearthed a hideout where Naxals set up an IED-making unit for carrying out subversive activities in the forest cover of West Singhbhum district.

The discovery of the IED-making unit marks a significant triumph for law enforcement agencies battling insurgency in the region. Situated in the dense forests of Hushipi under the Tonto thana area, which falls within the Kolhan forest division, the hideout was uncovered during a meticulously executed search operation conducted by the police and paramilitary forces on Monday evening.

"A substantial cache of explosives and materials was seized from the hideout, underscoring the nefarious intentions of the Naxals," said a police official. "Among the items confiscated were large quantities of ammonia nitrate, sulfur powder, and gunpowder, along with plastic and aluminum pipes of various sizes," he added.

Additionally, authorities discovered cans, petrol, a grinder machine, and 21 arrows intended for the creation of arrow bombs.

"The revelation of this clandestine IED-making facility sheds light on the massive presence of Naxal insurgents in the Kolhan forest division," he remarked. "Despite the challenges posed by the rugged terrain and the insurgents' cunning tactics, the police and paramilitary forces have displayed remarkable courage and determination in their operations," he added.

Over the course of their endeavors, they have successfully uncovered more than a hundred IEDs, thwarting potential threats and safeguarding the lives of civilians and security personnel alike.

"This latest development represents a critical blow to the Naxal insurgency," emphasized the official. "It serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the authorities in their ongoing efforts to combat extremism and restore peace and stability to the region," he concluded.

The revelation of this clandestine IED-making facility sheds light on the massive presence of Naxal insurgents in the Kolhan forest division. Following their expulsion from the neighboring Saranda forest in early 2023, a significant number of CPI-Maoist rebels infiltrated the Kolhan region, prompting a concerted effort by law enforcement to eradicate their influence.
