Any movie that is made on human trafficking is bound to bring its share of horror by showcasing what the girls are put through once they are caught in the trap. And if that film takes on a global perspective, the storyline is going to haunt the audience for days, if not weeks.

In that sense, Love Sonia is going to not only give you goosebumps while watching it, it will be a topic of conversation at parties for weeks to follow. That is precisely what Tabrez Noorani and producer  David Womark wanted to do.

Through the protagonist Mrunal Thakur as Sonia, Noorani takes you on a quest of a sister searching for her sibling, once she is sold by her debt-ridden father (Adil Hussain). As the story unfolds, one hopes that such an underbelly in the society didn’t exist, but it does and with a vengeance where the girls are sold for double the amount just because they are virgins and are re-stitched to make more money out of them.

What makes this film compelling is that it brings you true stories of women who are trafficked. The fact that the director has worked with an NGO and Thakur herself spent several days talking to the girls from the Red Light area in Kolkata gives you an authentic account of the lives of these women.

If only the makers had not tried to romantise this movie — since for these women, there is little romance even after being rescued — would have given been a real cap in the feather.

Over all, a movie for those who are looking for movies that have a real life connect.
