Budapest to host Athletics world

Monaco: The Hungarian capital of Budapest will host the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the IAAF announced on Tuesday. The next worlds will take place in Doha in 2019 before going to Eugene, United States, in 2021. It will be the first time Budapest has hosted the worlds, having previously hosted the 1998 European championships. The city was the sole candidate under a new IAAF system that saw away with traditional bidding campaigns in favour of a consultation process. Budapest expressed its interest in hosting the 2023 worlds after its candidacy for the 2024 Summer Olympics collapsed early last year.

Minerva beat East Bengal 1-0

Kolkata: Defending champions Minerva Punjab FC defeated East Bengal 1-0 to get back to title reckoning with their third win of the I-League season here on Tuesday. William Opoku scored the all-important goal for Minerva in the 77th minute. The win took Minerva to the second place with 11 points from seven matches, behind table-toppers Chennai City FC (17 points from 7 matches). For East Bengal (6 points from 5 matches), it was their third loss in five games and they now move further down to eighth out of 11 teams. Opoku got the goal he wanted when Minerva caught East Bengal on the break and Moinuddin floated in a cross from the left flank which pierced an onrushing Ubaid and a retreating Manoj Mohammad to land perfectly at the feet of Ghanaian whose first time connection went into the empty net.

River Plate confirm madrid flight

Buenos Aires: The River Plate team will leave for Spain on Wednesday to play the second leg of the highly controversial Libertadores Cup final, the club announced on Monday. In a statement to the South American football federation CONMEBOL, the Argentinian club said the team would leave for Spain "Wednesday at 1400 local time (1700 GMT) in a charter flight from Ezeiza airport". River Plate had earlier said it was opposed to moving Sunday's match against fierce local rivals Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires to the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. Coach Marcelo Gallardo had called it "absurd", adding that his side had lost home advantage.The first leg at Boca Juniors' Bombonera Stadium had finished 2-2. The second leg of the Libertadores Cup takes place in Madrid on December 9.

Little Steps win KBD Jr Delhi leg

NEw Delhi: In a test of strength and passion for kabaddi, the KBD Juniors Season 2 Delhi finale witnessed Little Steps Public School emerge victorious against Rajkiya Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya and the score was 33 - 11. Little Steps Public School had an unbeaten run to lift the trophy. Little Steps Public School led by female coach Karishma Raut orchestrated a brilliant game with decisive precision against Rajkiya Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya and went on to become the champions of the Delhi leg for KBD Juniors season 2. Prior to the city finals, the two semi-final matches witnessed Chhotu Ram Public School test their mettle against Little Steps Public School and Rajkiya Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya took on Apollo International School.

Gujarat thrash Patna Pirates

New Delhi: Gujarat Fortunegiants registered a resounding 45-27 win over Patna Pirates in a Pro Kabaddi Season 6 match to become the second team to qualify for the play-offs. Parvesh Bhainswal produced a superb defensive show as he scored eight tackle points. Sachin and Prapanjan contributed nine raid points each to lead their team to victory. For Pardeep Narwal, it was a day to forget as he scored just one tackle point and that cost the defending champions Patna Pirates dear. In the other game, Dabang Delhi see off Telugu Titans 34-29 to register third win in home leg.
