In connection with the mysterious death of Sasmita Dey, a Plus III final year student of Nilgiri Women's College, the police arrested her best friend Lucky, also a Plus III final year student reading in another college. Dey, a resident  of Baliapal, was found hanging from ceiling fan of her hostel room on September 28.  Non materialization of a lesbian relationship into marriage drove the 19-year-old college girl to end her life, said police.  Nilgiri police station IIC Nalita Modi said after finding lesbianism angle, Lucy Biswal was taken into custody for abetting the suicide of her friend Dey. "Although it appeared to be a case of usual suicidal case yet the matter came to light after recovery of the suicidal note and other evidences.  The deceased and the accused were in a very close relationship. The deceased insisted to marry the accused; and when the latter rejected the proposal of the former, she took the drastic step,” said Modi, adding that the accused was forwarded to court on Sunday after being booked under Section 306 of IPC (abetment) .

The diary, SMSs and WhatsApp messages revealed that they were lesbians, the IIC said, adding that although they were in different colleges and different hostels, they maintained their closeness for about one and a half years.
