Vedas, Sanskrit and Yoga will be compulsory as special curriculum in the Government universities of Uttarakhand. Apart from this, centres for research on the native Garhwali and Kumaoni languages will also be opened in the Government universities of the state, said chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. He was addressing the media regarding the convocation to be held in the Doon University later this month.
The chief minister said on Sunday that the state government had taken various steps to bring about an improvement in the sphere of higher education. The government has decided to annually honour five educators for commendable work in education and research. The honour will be named after Bhakt Darshan, the first MP from Garhwal constituency. Further, Garhwali and Kumaoni language centres will be established in government universities to encourage the regional languages. Rawat said that various universities are awarding honourary doctorate of science degrees to various personalities of Uttarakhand for their contributions in different fields. In its first convocation ceremony, the Doon University has decided to confer honourary doctorate degrees on folk singer Narendra Singh Negi, Kanpur MP and former Union HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi.
The minister of State for Higher Education, Dhan Singh Rawat said that the state government had decided that convocations should be held in the state universities every year. The Doon University will be holding its convocation on November 30.
Doon University vice chancellor Chandrashekhar Nautiyal also expressed his views on the occasion.
