AIADMK wrests 2 seats from rivals in Tamil Nadu

Friday, 25 October 2019 | Kumar Chellappan | Chennai

The ruling AIADMK in Tami Nadu got enough reasons to celebrate 2019 Diwali with gaiety as it wrested two Assembly constituencies from its rivals in the bypolls held on October 21.

The AIADMK candidates Muthamilselvan and V Narayanan registered impressive wins from their rivals, the DMK and the Congress candidates by impressive margins. The bypolls were necessitated by the death of the DMK legislator Radhamani (Vikravandi) and the resignation of H Vasanthkumar (Nanguneri) who was elected to the Lok Sabha in the May 2019 general election. The AIADMK was literally decimated by the DMK-led Opposition Front in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The party could win just one out of the 39 seats in stake from the State. The AIADMK had lost 13 out of the 20 seats it had held in the assembly where by-polls were held along with the Lok Sabha election. While the AIADMK candidate Muthamilselvan defeated his DMK rival Pugazhendhi by a margin of 44, 782 votes, the party’s V Narayanan defeated his Congress opponent R Manoharan by 32, 312 votes.
