1st unit of 800 KV HVDC Transformer flagged off

Thursday, 14 March 2019 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

DK Thakur Executive Director BHEL Bhopal the other day in presence of POWERGRID officials, flagged off the first unit of 800 kV HVDC Transformer for country’s prestigious 6000 MW Raigarh Pugalur project, Raigarh.

The technology intensive 800 kV HVDC Transformer was successfully manufactured and Type tested at BHEL Bhopal’s modern manufacturing facility in collaboration with ABB, where its design & manufacturing supervision was given by ABB Sweden. Several other units of 800 kV HVDC Transformers of this project are also in advance stage of manufacturing in BHEL.

BHEL in partnership with ABB Sweden is presently executing country’s one of the largest 6000 MW ±800 kV Raigarh-Pugalur High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project being setup by central transmission utility POWERGRID corporation of India Limited. BHEL Bhopal in partnership with ABB, will be supply of 8 Nos. 295.1 mva, 765 kv, HVDC Transformer for 6000 MW Raigarh Pugalur BIPOLE. This is a very prestigious order for BHEL.

BHEL is the largest manufacturer of Power Transformers in India and pioneer in manufacturing and testing of HVDC Transformers and indigenous development of large rating and specialized type

Transformers up to 1200 kV class.

Dedicated and highly skilled workers were involved in manufacturing of this transformer. BHEL has already successfully produced 2 No; 800kV transformer for NE-Agra project. When none of the prime manufacturer has successfully tested 800kV HVDC similar transformer at one go, BHEL did it for the first time for NE-Agra HVDC link in 2017 and again successfully tested at one go the RP 800.

It is equivalent to more than six large power plants and will be enough to meet the electricity needs of over 8 crore people in India.

The 1,830 kilometer (km) link will be among the longest in the world.

The two-way link will integrate thermal and wind energy for transmission of power, supporting electricity demands in the south, when wind strength is low, and transmitting clean energy to the north, when there is excess wind power.

On this occasion GM (TCB)- Vinay Nigam, GM (MM and LGX)- Vipin Minocha, GM(QC)- MS Kinra, GM (HYDRO and FBM)- PK Mishra, GM (LGX)- GK Srinivasa, AGM (TRM and TXX)- Avinash Chandra, PGCIL Customer R Singh and ABB-Engr, HEIKE etc were also present along with other Employees of TRM Department.
