A three day theatre festival is being organised in the city. The festival began here from Saturday at Shaheed Bhavan auditorium. The fest began with the play The Flies.
The theatre festival is being organised by Samantar Theatre Troupe. Directed by Manoj Nair the play was beautifully performed by the artists of Shadow Theatre Troupe.
Prior to the play, Purv Rang was held. During the Purv Rang Devesh Maurya along with his troupe performed Rang Sangeet. It was beautifully performed and was much loved by the audience
The Flies is a play by Jean-Paul Sartre, written in 1943. It is an adaptation of the Electra myth, previously used by the Greek playwrights Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides.
The play recounts the story of Orestes and his sister Electra in their quest to avenge the death of their father Agamemnon, king of Argos, by killing their mother Clytemnestra and her husband Aegisthus, who had deposed and killed him.
The basic story of the play is Orestes returns home after many years' absence and finds that his mother, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegistheus (her husband in The Flies), have murdered Agamemnon, Orestes' father; they now sit on the throne and have made a slave of Orestes' sister, Electra. She urges her brother to murder them, which he does, and then he is hounded for the rest of his life by the Furies of revenge.
The play was wonderfully performed by the artists keeping the story intact. The direction, backdrop of the stage and light design of the play added more zest in the play.
