Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat flagged off an awareness rally of secretariat officials for raising awareness on polythene-free green Doon.
Stressing on the necessity of public awareness for a polythene free green city, he said that the rally by secretariat officials would bring positive results in the future.
He said a human chain will be formed in Dehradun on November 5 to make the city polythene free.
More than one lakh people will form this 50 kilometre long human chain.
Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for a nation free of single use plastic, he exhorted all to participate in the effort.
Rawat added on July 16, 2020, on the occasion of Harela festival, tree plantation will be undertaken across the State.
The State Government’s attempt will be to facilitate tree plantation across the State in one hour on Harela after that.
Stressing on the need for awareness, he said five minute speeches should be given in schools every week on environmental protection and sanitation.
Stating that the campaign being undertaken by Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is getting good results, he stressed that public cooperation is vital for making Dehradun polythene free soon.
Dehradun Mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said the MCD is undertaking a large scale awareness campaign to end the use of plastic in the city.
As a result, there has been a drop of about 50 per cent in the use of plastic in the city. With public involvement the city will soon become plastic free, he said.
Additional Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, various bureaucrats and officials were also present on the occasion.
