City cops on toes post gangrape incident

Thursday, 05 December 2019 | Divya Modi | Ranchi

After the gangrape of a 25- year-old Law student in Ranchi, last week the city police are on their toes to ensure the safety of all the female students around the various colleges and universities.

The police have constantly been appealing to the students to report any untoward cases at the earliest to avoid any further incidents like this. The female students are also being urged not to ignore but report even the smallest incidents of eve teasing.

“At the moment, measures have been taken around the various colleges with female students in the City. The motorbike squad called ‘Shakti’ is being vigilant around the various varsities,” said Saurabh, Ranchi City Superintendent of Police (SP).

Students can call up on the number 100 to lodge a complaint. To file a complaint anonymously, girls can either directly call or Whatsapp the Ranchi Superintendent of Police or the Ranchi Superintendent of Police (Rural).

“Even if the concerned girl is apprehensive of filing a complaint, which is very common in most cases, they are being encouraged to at least inform the personnel. This will help us in identifying the sensitive areas where we need to be more cautious,” added the City SP.

At NUSRL, police picket will also be made on the university premises, for which the varsity is responsible for getting the structure in place. For the time being, one lady sub- inspector and three constables have been deputed.

“Since NUSRL is located on the outskirts of the City, a dedicated patrolling vehicle for 24 hours has also been deployed there. Recently, a meeting was also held with the university Vice Chancellor and the college along with the administration has decided to install CCTV cameras and street lights inside the campus and its outer perimeter,” said Ranchi Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rishabh Kumar Jha

Both the university administration and district administration also have to work towards increasing the height of the boundary wall.

“Steps are also being taken to strengthen the women’s helpline. Apart from this a continuous dialogue is being ensured with the students who can freely report to the officer on duty. Students necessarily don’t have to file a formal FIR and appropriate action will still be taken,” added Jha.

Apart from NUSRL special focus will also be on the other colleges located in less habituated or the out skirts of the City.
