Labourers at industrial area deprived of rights

Monday, 18 February 2019 | Vikas Tyagi | Indore

The labourers working in the Pithampur industrial area are often deprived of the rights by the industrialists whenever they meet any accident while working in the factory.

Notably, in most of the industries of Pithampur industrial area the workers who are engaged in factories as labourers are given the job of working on machines. But the labour law clearly indicates that a worker through the labour contractor will be doing loading, unloading, packing, gardening and housekeeping work in industries.

However, when the labourers work in the factories they are given the work of operating small and big machines for which they are not trained but for their livelihood they are bound to follow the orders for the factory administration.

Several cases of accidents like finger and hand getting entangled in machines, fractures, burning and falling into the machines have taken place while working, bursting of boilers and other works in the factories in Pithmapur industrial area.

SDM Pithampur Virendra Katare told ‘The Pioneer’ that very soon the administration would convene a meeting of factory owners, labour officers, labour contractors, laborers and police to discuss the problems face to face.

Recently, a labourer Gajraj Singh had reported to the industrial health and safety department officer Pithampur Rajesh Yadav that his fingers were chopped and his ribs were broken while working on the machine in Shakti Pumps India limited sector 3 Pithampur few years back but the company has not paid any compensation to him as he was engaged through the private contractor and recently the company has ended his service.

It is to be noted that Pithampur is big industrial area comprising of more than 700 factories and more than one lakh workers are engaged in these factories as laborers.
