The work of replacing sodium lights in the 60 older wards is an ongoing process while the counting of the street light poles has been started in the 40 wards that were recently brought under MCD’s purview.
According to the information provided by the officials, there are around 44,000 street light poles in the 60 old wards of which the sodium bulbs have been replaced with LED in 33,000 street light poles with the process still continuing. In the newly added wards, the counting has been started in which about 8,000 poles have been marked for replacement of the lights so far.
Adding further in this the official in charge said, “The company which was given the project to replace the sodium bulbs with LED bulbs in the 60 wards stopped work due to some payment issues but it has resolved and the work has been resumed. We used to get around 100 plus complaints per day but finally, the work has been started and we fix the problem within one or two days of receiving the complaint. About replacing the sodium lights with LED lights in the new wards, that is in on hold till the first meeting of the newly elected board. The counting, however, has been started by us – about 8,000 poles are marked in the new wards for replacement of bulbs, but further work will be done after the first board meeting. We are waiting for the board meeting as the board will decide whether to continue using the services of the company which is presently working on this or to see if tenders can be floated afresh for this task.â€
