PWD gets financial nod for free Wi-Fi

The much-awaited Wi-Fi scheme of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government will soon be a reality as the Public Works Department (PWD) — the implementing agency has got the financial approval for providing free Wi-Fi, one of AAP's main poll promises. The Wi-Fi will be provided at big public parks, Mohalla clinics and bus stops. An amount of Rs 99,50, 38, 560 have been sanctioned for the project. The free Wi-Fi services will be provided at 100 hotspots in each assembly constituencies. Further, it will cover about 4000 bus stops.

As per the officials, the PWD will adopt rental model of Wi-Fi scheme for providing free internet to the public and a fixed amount will be paid per hotspot every month.

The free internet hotspot services will be provided at places with large number of footfalls such as public parks, metro stations, public parks, Mohalla clinics, bus stops and various other spots with huge footfall. Data limit of 15 GB per user at a speed of 200 Mbps having coverage at a radius of 50 metres and limiting up to 150-200 users.

"The hotspot at bus stops will be installed on the existing infrastructure bus stops and power supply for the hotspots shall be taken by the concessionaire. Further, the responsibility of the entire project viz. provision for a Router, Fibre cable connectivity, Control Switch, Poles, Electricity, data charges, maintenance of the system, permission for 'Right of Way' lies with the Concessionaire. Ownership of installations will also rest with the Concessionaire," said a government official.

The estimated budget of the free internet project for the citizens of national Capital is Rs 99, 50, 38, 5600.

As per the officials, the free Wi-Fi will be installed by end of the AAP Government's tenure once the tender will be awarded. "The project is running on an 'Opex Model (operating expense) Service model'. The entire capital investment in setting up the infrastructure will be made by the vendor. But the government will bear the operating cost of approximately Rs 100 crore per annum for providing 15 GB free WiFi per month for all users," PWD minister Satyendar Jain had said earlier.

Besides, the PWD has got the official sanction for installation of 1.4 lakh additional CCTV cameras as Phase II of the project. The estimated budget for installations, supplying, testing and commission of CCTV cameras is cost of Rs 613.53 crore and capital cost of 355.59 crore plus maintenance cost of Rs 257.94 crore. These CCTV cameras will be installed at Resident Welfare Association (RWA).
