Rahul, Priyanka may upset Tiwari’s applecart

Monday, 06 May 2019 | Sapna Singh | NEW DELHI

Rallies of Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi in North-east constituency of Delhi may upset the applecart of Delhi BJP president and the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Manoj Tiwari. Bhojpuri movie star-turned-politician Tiwari is not leaving any stone unturned to seek the support of the Purvanchalis .

However, former Chief Minister and Delhi Congress Sheila Dikshit's presence as Congress candidate has made the job tough for Tiwari who is seeking re-election. The "higher-octane" fight has drawn the attention of all who are keenly watching the developing scenario in this parliamentary seat.

As the polling date nears, leaders of the national parties are carpet bombing the national Capital with rallies in the no-holds-barred, high voltage 2019 General Elections.

At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address BJP rally in Ramlila ground in the central Delhi on Wednesday, Congress has also planned to filed its national leaders in different constituencies.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will take part in two rallies on May 6 and 7, while General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi will participate in road shows on May 8 in north west Delhi and south Delhi constituencies.

According to BJP leaders, to counter Congress leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also address a rally in Ramlila Maidan. "Campaigning has reached its peak now and if Congress is fielding its national leaders, we have PM Modiji, he is more than enough for all of the leaders of the Opposition," said a BJP leader.

Interestingly, Delhi's North east parliamentary constituency is vital in terms of political battle. Inorder to counter Tiwari, a Purvanchali leader and Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari, who is re - contesting for the seat, the congress has planned well and fielded Sheila Dikshit, who had served as Delhi Chief Minister for 15 long years.

In political battleground - 2019, the saffron soldier Tiwari has managed to attract crowd while campaigning with co-star and Haryanavi singer/dancer Sapna Chaudhary, however, as per the BJP office bearers, with each day passing and May 12 not that far away, the campaigning is also becoming a challenge for the candidates amid the news of participation of national leaders in Delhi's battlefield.

"With candidature of Congress's veteran leader Dikshit, Tiwari has already admitted that his constituency is a tough seat but also exudes confidence that BJP will retain its 2014 feat of securing all the parliamentary seats in the national capital," said a BJP leader.

Till now, Delhi BJP state unit President has done numbers of rallies in his constituency to address to his core Purvanchali vote bank.

Congress's campaign for ongoing Lok Sabha polls in Delhi will also reach its climax with the rallies of top brass in Delhi.

Interestingly, Purvanchali cadre in Delhi has propelled national leaders to become part of rallies in different constituency. Over 40 per cent of the population in constituencies of West, North West, North East and South Delhi are from Purvanchal.  However, the big proportion of Purvanchalis lives in unauthorized colonies.

While the national parties cannot ignore Purvancahli voters, who are present in all the seven parliamentary constituencies, both the BJP and Congress have fielded Purvanchali candidates — Tiwari from North east and Mahabal Mishra from West  Delhi respectively whereas Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Dilip Pandey, a purvanchali from the North east constituency.
