State airs grievances over share of Narmada Water

Friday, 19 July 2019 | PNS | Indore

Madhya Pradesh has registered its opposition with Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal for neglecting interest of the State in benefits from Narmada river water share among partner States.

Madhya Pradesh in its objection stated that Sardar Sarovar Reservoir Regulation Committee is overlooking the interests of the State.

It was mentioned that the representatives of the State are heard, but the points raised are not included in the agenda of the meeting.

The process of vaporization is natural in case of dams over Narmada alluvium like RSB, ISP, OSP and dams in Gujarat SPS but only in the case of Sardar Sarovar Reservoir it has to be stopped which is not correct. The errors in measuring water from canals and thermal power plants are applicable only on water reservoirs in Madhya Pradesh. These errors have been found with water reservoir of Sardar Sarovar dam for different uses when the measurements were taken.

The decision to distribute benefits of Narmada reservoir water has been taken in Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal Award and the responsibility of proper distribution has been given to Narmada Control Authority (NCA). In this regard, a meeting of the Authority held at Indore on Thursday.

In the 61st meeting of Sardar Sarovar Reservoir Regulation Committee, representatives of Madhya Pradesh claimed that their issues and views shared earlier were neglected. Their issues raised were not included in the proceedings of the meeting which has adverse impact on the interest of the state.

According to the NWDT provisions the demand to include excess use of water by Gujarat in 2017- 18 in the next year was nullified. In the year 2019 Chief Secretary Madhya Pradesh requested for production of electricity from the water share of Madhya Pradesh which was declined.
