Be on the cloud

Cloud computing  exists in many avatars, creating a huge opportunity for the Internet and enterprise businesses by offering efficient and scalable solutions, opening doors for lucrative options, says Saighiridhar VV

Beginning as an alternative to the soaring IT infrastructure cost, Cloud computing, has, within a short span, become the most defining trend now. Cloud computing is no longer a good-to-have option, but a must have one.

Cloud computing began as an alternative to the soaring IT infrastructure costs, and within a decade it has become the defining trend and it is an initiative that all CIO’s must evaluate or consider. According to a report by NASSCOM, the cloud market is expected to grow 3-fold to $7.1 billion by 2022. Globally, the cloud spending on IT is growing at 16.5 per cent (CAGR) and is expected to touch $345 billion by 2022.

Cloud computing has existed in multiple avatars, the present Cloud computing services is not very old. Its impact is creating a huge opportunity for the Internet and enterprise businesses, by offering efficient and scalable solutions for the industry. Many of the emerging cloud computing trends from the industry are entering a phase of high compatibility and scalability.

The standardisation of Cloud engineering, is further opening up new opportunities to support application-level processes with the help of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Given the pace at which cloud computing is getting embraced, 2020 can well become a new door-opener in cloud computing and its developments in various sectors. Starting 2020 and in this decade, we can foresee the following trends that will shape up cloud computing.

Security

The securing user data (Privacy) and protecting Intellectual property is the top priority for every organisation. Increased usage of cloud computing has resulted in a large number of users and their data vulnerable to security breach. Users are being subjected to denial of service, malware attacks, phishing, social data theft resulting in huge financial losses. Increasing cloud secure computing will be one of the key trends to watch for. Cloud administrators and architects will be expected to pay close attention to their business use cases and cover all aspects of securing their Cloud solution to avoid embarrassment and revenue loss.

Serverless computing

Serverless computing is the new in-demand and it is increasing a growing number.  Though clients tend to align with a particular cloud service provider, but many open source solutions are providing serverless computing service across the industry. The serverless model has a conventional structure that uses a pay as you go system giving the flexibility to organisations to have control of their IT Infrastructure expenses.

Edge Computing

One of the advantages of cloud computing is its distributed computing infrastructure. Organisations need to be always connected and provide instant access to their customers. Hence the sustainable infrastructure of Edge computing will enable them to meet the expectations and meet ever growing User experience. It is one of the sustainable options for the companies because of its low cost and easy access to data.

Hyper-scale data centres

This refers to the capability of an IT system or architecture to scale exponentially and ability to respond to change with minimal downtime. Hyperscale data center is reshaping the global IT landscape, shifting data from on-premises computer rooms and IT closets to massive centralized data center hubs.

These cloud campuses offer economies of scale, enabling hyperscale operators to rapidly add server capacity and electric power. Organisations need an elastic IT infrastructure that can scale at an extremely quick pace to meet the dynamic increase and decrease of demand. . This has led to high demand for hyper-scale data centers.

Growing popularity

While organizations have started to align with a Cloud platform of their choice, fierce & healthy competition in the cloud arena has resulted in the availability of cost effective computing options with rich, feature-centric services, portability between services and flexible billing options. Organizations are now incorporating Multi-Cloud solutions and Hybrid-cloud to achieve flexibility in computing & cost effectiveness. In recent years there is a steep rise in organizations incorporating multi cloud deployment, which is clearly the new norm and the way forward in cloud computing.

Always Connected

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and organizations likely to adopt work-from-home culture for the foreseeable future, dependence on most of the regular softwares such as email, calendar, engineering / development, collaboration and video conferencing will only witness an upward usage trend with minimal downtime. Cloud came as the invisible saviour to  address these challenges.
