Monsoon likely to arrive in Kolhan on time

Wednesday, 03 June 2020 | PNS | Jamshedpur

With monsoon setting in over Kerala on Monday, India Meteorological Department’s regional centre has expressed hopes of its arrival during normal time in Kolhan. Kolhan is likely to get the monsoon showers by June 15. The India Meteorological Department’s regional centre claims like always the rainy season will enter from Dumka district.

“It may arrive four days before or after the tentative dates. Dumka is basically the actual line of entry for the monsoon. As of now, the frequent short-term rains are merely due to the formation of convective clouds and nor’wester winds. The life span of the local clouds is valid for two to three hours. It does not play an effective role in reducing the temperature,” said an official. The IMD office considers the months of March to May as pre-monsoon period.

The city has been sweltering for the past few days with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and wearing a deserted look. Frequent power cuts have added to the woes of residents. Passengers and commuters have been worst hit with hot winds blowing during the day.  According to meteorological officials, the lack of thunderstorm activity that precedes the monsoon showers, could be the reason that temperatures are five to six degrees above the norm. People are eagerly awaiting the onset of the monsoon season.

There have been 19 wet days with maximum tempeatures recording below normal on most days in most places of Kolhan. May this year has been coolest in recent few years, reveal Met statistics on Monday.

Weathermen have predicted more happy showers in the next four to five days due to a low pressure trough running from north-west Uttar Pradesh to interior Odisha over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The  number of Nor'westers, which is an April-May phenomenon, that  results in widespread rain is also a contributing factor.

Frequent cyclonic circulations and low-pressure troughs and the cyclonic storm Amphan too helped control the weather. "The month of May has been cool in last one decade atleast " said an expert weather forecaster.
