The Court of Ganjam District Judge on Tuesday sentenced a man to seven years of imprisonment for raping his younger brother’s girlfriend in 2010.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on convict Babula Swain. His brother Bhagya Swain was acquitted over lack of evidence.
According to reports, Bhagya, a resident of Dengapadar village under the Polasara police limits in the district, was in a relationship with the woman of a nearby village. They decided to marry each other, for which they had gone to Puri on February 25, 2010.
On the pretext of marrying the woman at the Shree Jagannath Temple on February 27, 2010, Bhagya took her to the Puri bus-stand, abandoned her and fled the place.
Later, Babula met the woman in Puri while he had gone there to search his brother. He then took her towards his aunt’s place in Balugaon. After reaching the Balugaon bus-stand, he took her to a secluded place on the pretext of taking a shortcut to his aunt’s house and raped her.
