The city is witnessing one death every other day due to road accidents. A total of 26 road accident cases were reported in the month of May in which 14 people died and 17 people were injured.

The data were revealed at a meeting of the Road Safety Committee held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav at the Collectorate auditorium.

In the meeting, a detailed review of road accidents occurred in the month of May and their causes, as well as what precautionary steps can be taken in view of road safety were discussed. In order to reduce road accidents in NH, the Deputy Commissioner directed the District Panchayati Raj Officer to hold an awareness campaign with the newly elected panchayat representatives in the panchayats along the highway that they should not allow their animal to go towards the highway. It came to the fore in the meeting that many cases of road accidents have come to the fore due to the arrival of free animals on the highway.

The project director of NH brought the matter of illegal median cut to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner. Illegal median cut is also becoming a major reason in road accidents, about which the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the residents of the district not to do so in view of the safety of life and property. At the same time, even in urban areas, the Khatal operators and cattle owners were directed to give strict instructions not to leave their animals on the road.

The District Transport Officer Dinesh Ranjan informed that the identified black spots in the district are almost over, necessary action has been ensured for signage, roundabout construction and road widening. The Health Department was directed to activate the trauma center at Ghatshila and Baharagora at the earliest and ensure the availability of 108 ambulance service and the availability of manpower for the trauma center was reviewed. Simultaneously, in the event of a road accident on the highway, the ambulance service 1033 (toll free) was directed to be promoted.

Traffic DSP was directed to depute interceptor vehicles to check over speeding on the highway. Along with this, deputation of traffic police was ordered in Dimna and Pardih intersection so that the traffic system could be operated accident free in a better way. Direction was given to ensure strict action to free them from encroachment by continuously campaigning on Bistupur, Sakchi, Mango Bus Stand, Golchakkar, Jubilee Park and other major roads and service lanes on NH. Regular action was directed to check that buses or other vehicles do not stop for a long time near the Mango roundabout.
