78 kgs of marijuana seized at checking point

In a yet another breakthrough against drug rackets in the district, the rural police seized 78 kgs of marijuana from the vehicles at a checking point under the Baharagora police station  area in the Ghatsila sub-division.

While seizing the smuggled consignment of marijuana, the police also arrested seven persons, including the smuggler.

Addressing media, East Singhbhum district superintendent of police (Rural) Mukesh Lunayet said that culprit Rajdeep Singh was smuggling marijuana from Andhra Pradesh’s Vijay Nagar via Odisha to Jamshedpur as the police came to know about it the team succeeded to bust the gang with the smuggled consignment.

“We got a tip off that two vehicles carrying the marijuana are coming from Odisha through NH-33. Following the specific information, a team was set up under the leadership of SDPO, Ghatsila, Kuldeep Toppo which intercepted the cars at a checking point in Kaliadanga under the Baharagora police station  area and nabbed the gang with the marijuana,” said Lunayet while talking to the media at a press conference at Ghatsila.

The rural SP said those arrested were three from Ghatsila and as many from Baharagora and one from Dumaria block in the Ghatsila sub-division.

The senior police officer said Rajdeep Singh who is the smuggler revealed that he had bought the marijuana at a rate of Rs 30,000 a kg from Vijay Nagar and had planned to sell out the stuff at Jamshedpur.

Notably, the steel city of Jamshedpur was a hotbed of marijuana consumers till mid-nineties.  The brown sugar along with other narcotic substances, including marijuana were found easily at places like Dhatkidih, Jugsalai, Golmuri and Sakchi, but following a series of raids by police had stopped the sale of these narcotic substances.
