: In response to a call given by the Ghumusar Zilla Joint Action Committee, a dawn-to-dusk bandh at Bhanjanagar was observed on Monday, protesting against the Government’s apathy and inordinate delay in formation of a separate Ghumusar district.
Despite having all the eligibility criteria for formation of a separate Ghumusar Zila, the Government is deliberately making a delay in the matter, Action Committee president Somanath Nayak alleged.
Over 40 social organisations including Ghumusar Civil Society and Utkal Journalists Association joined the bandh. During the bandh, hundreds of agitators were seen picketing at strategic locations in the town holding placards and banners and chanting slogans in support of their demand.
The vehicular traffic was completely off on the road, commercial and business establishments were shut down, while all Government and private offices including banks closed their shutters. Only educational institutions were open for conduct of examinations; so also, health services were exempted from the bandh. If the Government does not give district status to Ghumusar, the agitation will further be intensified, the Joint Action Committee cautioned.
