Even though the Government is announcing various welfare schemes for people, still many of them are yet to reach the remote regions in Gajapati district.
There are many villages in the district where there are no motorable roads, due to which ambulances are not able to reach the doorsteps of patients. There have many instances when patients, including pregnant women, are carried on shoulders by their relatives and fellow villagers to hospitals.
In one such incident, in Jagersingh village under Mohana block, where one Sunita Sabar developed labour pain, the villagers called up the 108 Ambulance. But though the emergency vehicle came, it could not reach the village due to the poor road condition.
Finding no other alternative, ambulance driver Santosh Nayak, pharmacist Rabinaryan Behera and helper Surendra Sethi reached the village after trudging over two kilometers and then carried the woman on a stretcher on their shoulders to the vehicle.
The woman was admitted to the Chandragiri hospital, where she gave birth to a baby girl. The duo’s conditions were stated to be stable.
