Young lovers attempt to end lives over parents’ disapproval

Tuesday, 18 April 2023 | PNS | Lucknow

Upset over objections raised by their parents, young lovers tried to end their lives by slitting their throats and wrists. However, the youth later informed his friend about the incident. Both were found lying in a pool of blood inside a hotel room in Firozabad. They were rushed to a hospital where their condition was said to be critical.

On being informed, police visited the spot along with forensic experts to collect evidence from the hotel room. They were said to be waiting for the duo to regain consciousness so that their statements could be recorded. The police recovered a paper-cutting knife from the hotel room.

According to the police, both of them first slit their throats with the knife and then slashed their wrists. The youth, identified as Shubham Jain (25), hails from Gandhi Mandi area in Sirsaganj. He informed his friend Rinku about the incident over the phone and asked him to save his life.

Rinku immediately reached the hostel and sought help from the staff. Parents of the youth and the girl, identified as Riya Gupta (24) — also of Sirsaganj — were against their affair and the girl’s marriage was recently fixed with another youth. Upset over this, both decided to end their lives. Shubham and Riya did BTech together and Riya got a job in Bengaluru.

While working from home for two years due to Covid, she fell in love with Shubham. On Sunday afternoon, she and Shubham reached a rented room in Banke Bihari restaurant on Shikohabad highway and both tried to end their lives the same evening.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident in Mirzapur, a girl and her lover were found unconscious in Patehra forest under Sant Nagar police station on Sunday night. It was said that both consumed some poisonous substance. Villagers rushed them to the district hospital and informed local police.

Their families were later also informed about the incident. Reports said truck driver Pratap (26), a resident of Sant Nagar in Mirzapur, is married and has two children. Few months back, he fell in love with a girl in her early 20’s. His wife and the girl’s family opposed their relationship.

On Sunday evening, both decided to end  their lives as they could not go ahead with marriage. They went to nearby Patehra jungles and consumed some poisonous substance. Luckily though, some villagers passed through the area and found them lying unconscious. They rushed the duo to the district hospital where their condition was said to be critical. A case was registered in this connection and further probe was underway.
