Doctors at AIIMS bhopal have triumphantly treated and discharged a 9-year-old girl afflicted with the rare Atypical Hemolytic Syndrome (HUS).
Initially presenting symptoms of body swelling, persistent fever, and reddish-colored urine, the child's challenging medical journey unfolded across multiple hospitals.
Despite earlier interventions in local hospitals, her condition worsened, leading to admission to three more hospitals with severe symptoms.
Three weeks into the onset of symptoms, the patient reached the Pediatric Nephrology Unit at AIIMS Bhopal. Diagnosed with Atypical HUS with elevated anti Factor H auto-antibody titres, the child was critically ill, requiring non-invasive ventilator support due to pulmonary edema.
Dedicated medical team, led by Prof Girish Bhatt, Dr Amber, residents and dialysis staff skilfully managed the challenging aspects of treatment for children, incorporating 8 cycles of hemodialysis and 17 settings of Plasma Exchange Therapy (TPE). This involved passing the patient's blood through a plasma filter to remove disease-causing antibodies, showcasing a significant improvement in the patient's condition.
Prof (Dr.) Ajai Singh, executive director of AIIMS Bhopal, underscored the success of this case, emphasizing the hospital's commitment to timely and expert intervention in managing complex pediatric conditions. The institution continues to pursue excellence in pediatric care through advanced treatments and multidisciplinary approaches, ensuring positive outcomes for young patients.
