Special Holiday on June 1 for Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh Voters Employed in Punjab


Chandigarh: A special holiday has been declared for voters hailing from Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh, currently employed in Punjab, to exercise their franchise on June 1, 2024.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C said that employees working in government offices, boards/corporations, and government educational institutions across Punjab, who are registered voters of UT Chandigarh or Himachal Pradesh, are eligible for a special leave on June 1, 2024 (Saturday). This leave, upon presentation of their voter card, will be granted without deduction from their leave balance. He further informed that employees of UT Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh working in any industrial establishment, business, trade or other establishments in Punjab will also benefit from a paid holiday on June 1, 2024, for casting their vote, in accordance with Section 135B(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. A notification to this effect has been issued by the Punjab government.

Himachal CS chairs meeting on implementation of three new criminal laws

Shimla: Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena chaired a meeting on Tuesday regarding the implementation of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatya Sakshya Adhiniyam. He said that proper arrangements would be made in the police and all related departments to ensure effective implementation of three criminal laws which would come into force from 1st July, 2024 He said that police officers, judicial officers, state forensic science, officers of prison department and field staff would be provided proper training for using digital technology regarding the new laws. He said that adequate changes would be made in the crime and criminal network tracking system of the police to ensure effective implementation of the provisions of the laws. Under this, the software of the system will be updated on the basis of new laws. Additional Chief Secretary Onkar Chand Sharma, Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services S.R. Ojha, Secretary Law Sharad Kumar Lagwal, Director Prosecution Mohinder Chauhan and other senior officers attended the meeting.

32,000 liters of illegal liquor seized in Himachal

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh State Taxes and Excise department has seized about 32,000 litres of illegal liquor, officials on Tuesday said. Excise Commissioner Yunus, in a statement issued here, said that during an intensive operation, the department raided 10 illegal liquor manufacturing units (Bhatties) in Dabat and Majri areas of Bilaspur district. In a joint action taken with the Excise department of Punjab, 18,000 bulk liters of Lahan worth Rs 18 lakh was recovered and destroyed recently, Yunus said. A team of the Excise department of Una district has recovered 13,730 bulk liters of liquor in two cases, he added. The officer said that the department was continuously taking action to curb illegal liquor trade.
