Huge tumor removed from a patient in AIIMS Bhopal

Tuesday, 13 February 2024 | Staff Reporter | BHOPAL

Through a complex operation at AIIMS Bhopal, a huge tumor of approximately 10 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm size located at the junction of the esophagus and stomach was removed and the patient was provided a better life.

Actually, a 34-year-old woman had presented in the department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS Bhopal, with complaints of blood in vomiting. She also got checked at other hospitals in the city where she was told that she had a large tumor between her food pipe (esophagus) and stomach. <

On endoscopic examination of the food pipe and stomach in the Cancer Department of AIIMS Hospital, several bulges were found in the lower part of the food pipe.

On biopsy of these lumps, 'Leiomyoma' of the esophagus was detected. On contrast CT scan of the chest and abdomen, a tumor was found on the lower part of the esophagus and the gastro esophageal junction, which was stuck to the left part of the liver. Since this lump was a type of benign tumor, Dr. Ankit Jain, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS, Bhopal decided to operate it, as it was the only treatment for this type of tumor.

During the operation, the chest was opened from the right side and the esophagus and intrathoracic part of mass was separated from various organs of the chest. After that, the abdomen was opened and the mass was separated from the liver, aorta, diaphragm and spleen. The operation was difficult as the mass was large which nearly obscured the working space in the upper abdomen leading to difficulty in separating it from surrounding organs and ligation of the large blood vessels which supplied blood to the mass.

After removing the esophagus with the mass, a new food pipe was constructed from the normal part of the stomach and connected to the remnant of the food pipe in the neck. This difficult operation, which lasted for about 9 hours continuously, was successfully completed by the team of the Cancer Surgery Department. The patient is now doing well and has been discharged. Under the guidance and encouragement of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal this type of complex surgeries are now being performed regularly by the Department of Surgical Oncology of AIIMS Bhopal.
