INDI Alliance demands probe headed by HC Judge in Haldwani violence

Sunday, 11 February 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

A delegation of the INDI Alliance and civil society met the governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh at Rajbhawan on Saturday. The delegation demanded that a judicial probe or inquiry by a High Court judge should be ordered to investigate the recent Haldwani violence.  The delegation was led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara who had visited the affected areas of Vanbhulpura in Haldwani on Friday.  Mahara requested the governor to intervene to restore peace and communal harmony in the State.

The delegation submitted a memorandum to the governor on the occasion. The leaders in the memorandum said that a free and fair inquiry is needed to find the cause of the violence of such a large scale.

The delegation said that the government should either order a judicial inquiry or the investigation should be done by a serving or retired judge of the HC. The leaders pointed out that prima facie serious questions on the failure of administration; haste and use of force have come up in the incident.

The memorandum stated that from last one year the anti-encroachment campaign is under the scanner as complaints of action without serving notice and partisan action have been received. The leaders also opined that severe retribution by the police in the name of dealing with the situation should have been avoided. The delegation requested the governor that he should direct the government to act within the ambit of constitution and law.

The delegation included PCC vice president (Organisation) Mathura Dutt Joshi, chief spokesperson Garima Dasauni, Mahanagar president Jaswinder Gogi, Amarjeet Singh, national secretary of Samajwadi Party SN Sachan, CPI leader Samar Bhandari, CPI-M’s RS Negi, CPI ML leader Indresh Maikhuri, AAP leader Ravindra Anand, Kamla Pant and others.
