A Maoist carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakhs on his head was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Thursday.

The gunfight took place on a forested hill between Gondpalli, Parlagatta and Badepalli villages on the Dantewada-Sukma district border with the District Reserve Guard, Bastar Fighters and the Central Reserve Police Force on Wednesday night, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said.

After the battle ended, the body of a Maoist, Chandranna alias Satyam (50), was recovered.

Satyam, who carried a reward of Rs 8 lakhs, was the divisional committee member in the Mad Division of the outlawed Maoist organization.

He was active for over 30 years and had been involved in several Naxalite incidents.

A country-made pistol, four live cartridges and other Maoist-related materials were recovered from the spot.
