The elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been announced to be held on April 26 on Wednesday, adding that the general house meeting will be held at 11 am.

The general House meeting of MCD will be held at 11 am at the Aruna Asaf Ali Auditorium.                 According to the official notification, the nominations for the post of mayor and deputy mayor can be filed till April 18 in the office of the Corporation Secretary on any working day from 11 am to 5 pm. 

“The Ordinary April (2024) meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024 at 11.00 am in Aruna Asaf Ali Auditorium, A-Block, 4th Floor, Dr. Shayana Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, New Delhi. Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will also be held in this meeting of the corporation. It is issued by order of the Mayor,” MCD said in a statement.

The post of Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation is reserved for Scheduled Castes for the third year, it said.

Currently the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) holds both the post of mayor and deputy mayor in MCD. Shelly Oberoi is the mayor and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal is the deputy mayor of the MCD. Oberoi was unanimously elected as mayor after BJP candidate Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination while Aaley Mohammad Iqbal also got another term as deputy mayor after BJP candidate Soni Pal withdrew her nomination.

Meanwhile, Delhi CM Kejriwal has been in Tihar jail since April 1 in relation to the Delhi excise policy case. He was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He has been in judicial custody since April 15. ED has called the AAP chief as the ‘kingpin’ of the alleged scam.
