Located in the Chatra district of Jharkhand, India, lies the Amrapali-Chandragupta area - a beacon of hope for responsible mining and sustainable development. This Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) project isn't just about extracting coal to meet the nation's energy needs; it's a testament to how progress can be achieved in harmony with the environment and the community.
A Legacy of Achievement
CCL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, boasts a rich history. Established in 1975, it's a major contributor to the state exchequer and a prominent employer in Jharkhand. With 36 operational mines and 7 coalfields, CCL plays a pivotal role in India's energy security. The Amrapali-Chandragupta area itself is a powerhouse. In the 2023-24 financial year, it produced a staggering 22.58 million tonnes of coal, exceeding its target and contributing significantly to CCL's success. But Amrapali-Chandragupta's ambitions go beyond mere production figures.
Mining with Responsibility
The project stands out for its commitment to eco-friendly practices. Gone are the days of disruptive blasting. Amrapali-Chandragupta utilizes surface miners and modern shovel-dumper combinations, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing coal extraction.
Empowering the Community
The story of Amrapali-Chandragupta extends far beyond the mine itself. The project prioritizes the well-being of the surrounding communities, undertaking numerous initiatives that touch upon every aspect of life.
Healthcare for All
Recognizing the importance of good health, CCL installed an oxygen plant at the Community Health Center in Tandwa Block. This crucial equipment is a lifesaver for critical patients in the area. Additionally, regular health camps provide much-needed medical care to the local population.
Investing in Education
The future of any community lies in its youth. Amrapali-Chandragupta Area is actively shaping a brighter tomorrow by setting up 54 smart classrooms in 30 government schools. These classrooms provide students with a modern learning environment, fostering multidimensional development.
Education doesn't stop at classrooms. The project has also donated 500 desks and benches, a 52-seater school bus, and installed 20 RO plants to ensure students have access to clean drinking water and a comfortable learning environment. These initiatives have demonstrably increased school enrolment rates and reduced dropout rates, paving the way for a more educated future generation.

Sustainable Living
The project understands that a healthy environment is vital for a thriving community. To this end, Amrapali-Chandragupta Area has installed 1500 solar lights and 43 high mast solar lights in various villages, illuminating lives and promoting sustainable energy use. Furthermore, 16 solar-powered borewells provide clean drinking water, a basic necessity that many often take for granted.
Empowering Individuals
The project doesn't forget those who need a helping hand. 20 individuals with disabilities have received motorized tricycles and artificial limbs, granting them greater independence and mobility. Additionally, 35 battery-operated tricycles were distributed to local youth, promoting self-reliance and income generation.
Skilling for the Future
In today's world, marketable skills are essential. Amrapali-Chandragupta recognizes this and has trained 27 individuals in commercial driving through HMV training. This initiative empowers them to become self-employed or find employment opportunities, boosting their economic prospects.
Building a Sustainable Tomorrow
The commitment to the community extends beyond immediate needs. A smart township is currently under construction, providing modern residential facilities for employees. This thoughtful planning ensures the long-term well-being of the workforce.
Leadership with Vision
The success of Amrapali-Chandragupta is a testament to the visionary leadership of Shri P.M. Prasad, Chairman of Coal India Limited (CIL), and the guidance of Dr, B.V. Reddy CMD of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) has steered the project towards achieving energy security for the nation while fostering inclusive growth for workers and stakeholders.
A Model for the Future
The Amrapali-Chandragupta area stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that responsible mining and community development can coexist. By adopting innovative technologies, prioritizing environmental well-being, and empowering the local population, this project is paving the way for a sustainable future. As India marches forward on its path to progress, Amrapali-Chandragupta Area serves as a model for the industry, a shining example of how mining can be a force.
