Rains swell rivers, Swarnarekha reaches 116.56 meters, safety advisory issued

Sunday, 04 August 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The district has been experiencing continuous monsoon rains, leading to a significant rise in the water levels of the Kharkai and Swarnarekha rivers. While both rivers remain below their respective danger marks, the district administration is urging residents in coastal and flood-prone areas to exercise caution and prioritize safety.

The Swarnarekha River, measured at the Mango Bridge site, currently stands at 116.56 meters, below its danger level of 121.50 meters. Meanwhile, the Kharkai River, recorded at the Adityapur Bridge site, has reached 126.81 meters, nearing its danger mark of 129.00 meters.

In view of the rising water levels, the district administration has issued a safety advisory, urging citizens to stay away from the riverbanks to prevent any potential loss of life or property. The administration has emphasized the importance of following their guidelines to ensure public safety during this period of heavy rainfall.

Avoid Riverbanks: Residents are strongly advised not to go near the riverbanks of Kharkai and Swarnarekha. The strong currents and rising water levels pose significant dangers.

Stay in Safe, High Places: Those living in coastal or flood-prone areas should move to safer, higher ground to avoid the risk of flooding.

Follow Official Instructions: Citizens should adhere to all guidelines and directives issued by the district administration. These measures are in place to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season.

The district administration is actively monitoring the situation and has implemented several measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. These measures include:

Regular Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of the water levels in both rivers to provide timely updates and warnings to the public.

Emergency Preparedness: Ensuring that emergency response teams are ready to act swiftly in case of any flooding or other related incidents.Public Awareness Campaigns: Conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks associated with rising water levels and the importance of following safety guidelines.

“ The monsoon rains brought much-needed water to the region, but they also pose challenges that require vigilance and preparedness. The district administration's proactive measures and the cooperation of the community are essential in navigating these challenges safely. Citizens are urged to stay informed, stay safe, and support each other during this monsoon season,” said an official.

The monsoon trough at mean sea level was observed today passing through Bikaner, Sikar, Gwalior, Siddhi, the center of a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand, Sagar Island, and the northeast Bay of Bengal. Despite no heavy rain alert being issued for Monday and Tuesday, meteorologists anticipate heavy rain in isolated places on Wednesday, August 7. The recent rainfall over the past 24 hours has significantly reduced Jharkhand's rain deficit to 32%. According to the latest statistics, the state has received 359 mm of rain against the normal rainfall of 536 mm for this period.
