Respite from heavy rain for State today

The heavy showers which started on Thursday afternoon and persisted through Friday and most of Saturday are likely to halt on Sunday giving some respite to the residents of the State.

The low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand intensified into a deep depression on the morning of August 3 causing heavy rainfall in most parts of Jharkhand. Ranchi, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Dhanbad witnessed heavy showers. Since Thursday, the maximum amount of rainfall has been recorded in Ramgarh and Ranchi at 264.8 mm in the State. On August 3 the maximum rainfall was recorded at 62.6 mm in Daltonganj.

“The system is likely to continue move west- northwestwards across northwest Jharkhand during the next 48 hours. From August 4 the system is expected to move away from Jharkhand which will bring some significant respite from the rain. Parts of the district of Garhwa, Palamu and Chatra are likely to witness heavy showers while some parts across the State may also experience thunderstorm and lighting activity, On August 6 parts of north east and north west Jharkhand will receive heavy rain while on August 7 western parts of the State will witness heavy rain,” said Director MET Centre, Ranchi Abhishek Anand.

Anand further added that this spell of rain will prove to be very favourable for the farmers of Jharkhand. It will also recharge the ground water levels.

As per the bulletin shared by the MET Centre Ranchi on August 3, Jharkhand has received a total of 435.7 mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 3 and the overall amount of rain for the State is now normal. Till July 31 the State had only received 285.9 mm of rain as against the required amount of 508.2 mm and had a deficit of 42%.

The spell of heavy showers in 15 districts including the capital city has affected life across the State. In the Dipatoli area in Ranchi, water accumulated to about five feet and for the first time NDRF teams had to be deployed to rescue the residents. As many as 35 people were rescued to safety after water entered the ground floor of their houses.

As per reports a student named Ashwini also lost his life near Piska More in Ranchi. The child was returning home from school when a wall collapsed on him near Galaxia Mall. A resident of Madhukam, he was being accompanied by his sister who is said to be injured and is undergoing treatment.
