Vijender criticises AAP Govt for failure to address pollution crisis

Sunday, 21 July 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Former Delhi BJP President and MLA Vijender Gupta  strongly criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for its complete failure in addressing the pollution crisis in Delhi. A recent study has revealed that more than 70% of the total funds Delhi received from the Centre as part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) remain unutilised, making the national capital the worst in terms of the usage of climate funds among India's states and Union territories. The report has raised concerns about the management of NCAP over its five years of operation.

The report highlighted that while Delhi is among the worst polluted cities, most of the funding under NCAP has been allocated to dust control measures rather than combating combustion-based PM2.5 pollutants, which are far more harmful. Gupta pointed out that the incompetence of the Delhi government is evident as they have continuously blamed neighbouring states rather than taking substantial steps to improve the situation within Delhi. The pollution levels have become so severe that the city is becoming unliveable.

Gupta stated that if the Delhi government had utilised the given funds effectively to curb air pollution, the central government's goal of reducing pollution by at least 40% by 2025 could have been achieved. This would have resulted in fewer diseases and healthier residents in Delhi.

Gupta emphasised that the Kejriwal government appears indifferent to the health of the people and is jeopardising public health while focusing solely on politics. He further highlighted that Delhi is facing multiple crises, including a drinking water shortage, waterlogging from rains, traffic jams, the breach of the Munak canal barrage despite timely warnings, a deficit of Rs 72,000 crore in the Delhi Jal Board, corruption worth crores in DTC bus purchases, and the liquor scam in which the Chief Minister and his ministers are implicated and imprisoned.
