Woman judge threatened with life in Banda

Tuesday, 02 April 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

The Banda police registered a case after a woman judge alleged that she had received a letter through which she was issued a life threat.

The woman judge had last year alleged that she had been sexually harassed by a district judge and had written a letter to the apex court seeking permission to end her life. Months later, the same judge now claimed that she had received a letter containing a life threat.

In her complaint to the police, the judge claimed that the sexual harassment allegations could be the reason for the death threat letter. The sexual harassment case was pending with the Allahabad High Court, she added.

The judge also said that the name, phone number, and address of the sender on the envelope could be fake and urged the police to check CCTV footage of the post office from where the letter was sent. She claimed to have received the letter last Thursday evening.

The woman judge alleged that she believed that the letter had been sent as a part of conspiracy by Ravindra Nath Dubey, Anil Shukla and Krishna Dwivedi. She said that the letter had been sent in the name of Ravi Upadhyay but it was fake, so the CCTV of the post office should be investigated.

The civil judge said that she was in danger of her life and demanded that an FIR be registered and the whole matter be investigated properly.

Station House Officer of Kotwali Nagar in Banda, Anoop Dubey, confirmed that a case had been registered under sections 467 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code against three persons and further legal action was being taken.

He also said that CCTV footage of the post office would be scanned to nab the accused.

It may be mentioned that in a letter written to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on December 14 last year, the woman judge alleged that a district judge (who was senior to her) and his colleagues sexually harassed her.

The judge said in the letter, “In the short span of my job, I have had the rare honour of being abused on the dais of open court. I have been sexually harassed to every extent. I have been treated like garbage. I feel like I am a useless insect.”

According to information, the allegations of sexual harassment against the civil judge are being investigated by the High Court.
