A doctor was physically assaulted by a group of attendants at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar (BSA) Hospital in Rohini following the death of a newborn on Monday afternoon, police said. The incident took place around 2 pm and led to the registration of a criminal case at the North Rohini police station.
According to the police, the assault occurred when the doctor, who is posted in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGY) department, was on her way from the OPD to Ward No 12 to attend to her duties. As she passed through the corridor near Ward No 11, she was suddenly intercepted and attacked by four to five women, who were later identified as attendants of a patient named Soniya, a resident of Bakkarwala.
Soniya had been admitted to the hospital for delivery, and tragically, her newborn baby died earlier in the morning on the same day.
The doctor, currently under treatment at the hospital, told investigators that the women physically assaulted her without provocation. “They pulled my hair, tried to tear my clothes and beat me while I was just trying to reach my assigned ward for duty,” she said in her statement. The attack reportedly happened in full public view. Police officials confirmed that a criminal case has been registered under multiple Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws, including 221, 132, 121(1), 126(2), 76, 3(5) of BNS, along with Sections 186, 353, 332, 341, 354, and 34 of under the Medical Services and Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage of Property) Act, 2008.
“All five accused women have been identified and released after being bound down in the case. Legal proceedings are underway and further action will be taken based on investigation,” said a senior police officer from North Rohini police station.
