The wife of deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot Singh (52), had repeatedly pleaded with Gagan Preet Kaur, who was driving the BMW car, and her husband to take them to a nearby hospital. In her statement to police, Navjot Singh’s wife, Sandeep Kaur, said, “I was constantly requesting them to take us to the nearest hospital, as my husband was unconscious and needed immediate treatment. Instead, the lady took us to a small hospital in GTB Nagar. That lady told me her name was Gagan Preet Kaur.”
“My husband was wearing a turban at the time of the crash. But I was wearing a helmet. The FIR quoted her as stating that the crash happened around 1-pm on Sunday. “When we reached near Delhi Cantonment Metro Station, a blue BMW car came from behind at high speed and hit my husband’s motorcycle. My husband fell on the road and sustained very serious injuries and multiple fractures to the head, mouth and legs. I too suffered injuries and multiple fractures in the accident on my head and legs. After some time, I also fell unconscious,” she said.
The FIR records that the BMW was being driven by a woman with a male co-passenger. They put the injured couple into a van-type vehicle and they were driven to GTB Nagar. Police noted 1.30 pm as the time of occurrence and the spot near Metro Pillar No 67 on Ring Road towards Naraina. Further investigation into the case is underway, police said. Sandeep also identified the driver as Gagan Preet Kaur and recalled that the blue BMW, bearing registration number 0008, had overturned on the road during the incident.
Kaur said Singh suffered severe injuries to his head, face and legs. “I also have multiple fractures in my hands and legs and suffered head injuries. I have 14 stitches on my head,” Kaur said in her statement to the police.
According to eyewitnesses, the BMW— allegedly driven by Gagan Preet Kaur with her husband seated beside her —first struck the central verge before colliding with Singh’s motorcycle near Metro Pillar No 67. The impact caused the motorcycle to crash into a bus. Investigators suspect the car was being driven at high speed and that Gagan Preet lost control. After the accident, Gagan Preet, her husband, and their two children transported the injured couple to the GTB Nagar facility instead of nearby hospitals. As per the deceased’s friend, the hospital belongs to the driver’s relatives.
During questioning, Gagan Preet said she was travelling from Gurugram to her home with her husband, two children (a 6-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son) and a maid. She couldn’t remember the exact cause of the accident. She stated that after the crash, people helped her get out of her car and she saw the injured and deceased on the road.
When asked why she didn’t take them to a nearby hospital, she explained that she was in a state of panic and only knew the hospital they went to because her children had been treated there for COVID.
A report on her blood sample is still pending to see if she was under the influence of alcohol.
