Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate, Jaipal Singh ‘Vyasth’, has retained the Bareilly-Moradabad Graduate seat of the legislative council. Singh defeated his nearest Independent candidate, Hari Singh Dhillon by 14891 votes in a triangular contest, on Saturday.
Ruling Samajwadi Party candidate, Renu Mishra, was on the third spot. The polling for the by-polls was held on November 11 when 81735 of the 2.28 lakh graduate voters of nine districts used their franchise. The seat had been held for five terms by senior BJP leader Naipal Singh before he resigned after winning lok Sabha election from Rampur. The nine districts that fall in the graduate constituency include Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Rampur, Sambhal, Amroha, Moradabad and Bijnore. The lok Sabha constituency that fall in this graduate constituency including Bijnore, Nagina, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Sambhal, Badaun, Aonla, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur have BJP MP and only Badaun is with Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile state BJP president laxmikant Bajpai has hailed the win of the party candidate in the council bypoll. He claimed that the win proves the continuing popularity of Narendra Modi.
